The Glades County Economic Development Council, Inc. is pursuing a host of projects intended to attract new businesses to Glades County, retain and encourage existing businesses to grow, and generally working to promote gloriously natural Glades County. In the past year the EDC has: *Facilitated the redesignation of the county’s 19-square mile enterprise zone, which includes the entire city limits of Moore Haven and areas along US 27 north and south of the city limits, as well as portions of Lakeport, Palmdale, Ortona and SR 80. *Hosted the annual Big O Birding Festival in January, bringing new tourists, as well as vendors from all over Florida and Georgia to the area, boosting motel and campground rentals and sales in area restaurants and stores. *Received Main Street designation for the city of Moore Haven and launched a Main Street specific membership drive, aimed at revitalizing the city’s commercial district, as the first step toward improving commercial/tourism/economic development throughout the county. *Helped organize the recently concluding Glades County “Visioning” workshop series, which are expected to generate grant funding for future projects. In the coming year, we expect to continue to work with city and county officials and property owners to lure new commercial and light industrial businesses to the county and to encourage the development of eco-tourism ventures, including a weekly tour of Glades’ County birding sites. Our goal is to create jobs for Glades County residents, improve the county’s tax base necessary to provide essential services, while at the same time protecting the very quality of life that brought us to this area. To do this, we need your support. The Glades County Economic Development Council meets the first Monday of each month at 6:15 p.m. in the board room at Glades Electric Cooperative. Please mark your calendar and plan to attend! If you have any questions or would like more information, please call us at (863) 946-0300 or email twhirls@gladescountyedc.com. |
